Wildfires differ from other fires by: 1) extensive size 2) speed at which they spread 3) potential to change direction 4) ability to jump gaps
A community wildfire protection Plan (CWPP) was developed in 2006 identifying issues of high priority (reducing fuel loads, improving fire prevention, prevention education, and direct outreach to rural landowners at risk.
With over 71,000 acres of CRP, 83,600 acres of range/hayland, 6,500 acres of native woodlands and approximately 320,000 acres of corn stubble Barnes County has an abundance of fast-burning fuels.
The majority of farmstead shelterbelts were planted in the 1940's and are now in a state of decline. These dead shelterbelts create additional hazardous fuels. This grant form the US Forest Service provides funds to create defensible spaces around homes and structures.
The First Step:
Firewise Assessments are performed at no cost to the individual. The assessor looks at the building construction, roof type, gutters, overhanging branches, eaves, soffit vents, screens, crawl spaces, foundation, decks, adjacent landscape, ladder fuels, propane tanks, debris, hay storage, and surface fuels surrounding the yard.
Recommendations are given, but implementation of any practice is voluntary. Cost-share of 50% is available to modify and break up the fuels around dwellings by thinning, pruning, brush clearing, removal of dead trees, relocating propane tanks, removal of old buildings, or replacing wood mulch with rock.
After tree renovations are completed new tree plantings can be designed and cost shared at the %50 rate.
Minimum Practices Required:
Decks & porches need to be kept clear of debris & combustible vegetation.
Lawn must be mowed less than 6 inches.
No combustible materials within 3 feet of buildings.
Firewood must be 30 feet from the house.
Screened trash barrels with 10 foot radius clearing.
Address must be visible from the driveway.
